Karoo Madonna Atelier is a gallery and working studio space in the heart of Somerset West, Cape Town, a long-held dream now brought to life. Created as both a personal sanctuary and a space to share creativity with others, the atelier is where I paint, experiment, teach, and connect. More than just a studio, it’s a living, breathing creative hub - where art is made, exhibited, and celebrated with the wider community.

A bit about me...

My work is a reflection of my deep connection to the rugged beauty of the Karoo and my personal journey as an artist.

For over 30 years, I've drawn inspiration from South Africa's vast, arid landscapes, capturing their stillness and strength in my Karoo Landscapes, Still lifes, and Karoo Madonna series.

Recently, my art has evolved, becoming more expressive and bold as I explore more contemporary themes.

We're proud to present Silence in Ink, a solo exhibition by our latest artist-in-residence, Jacolize Swart, at our Karoo Madonna Atelier in Somerset West. The collection features delicate Ink and Acrylic on paper and canvas, exploring themes of stillness and introspection.

The exhibition opened on 2 October and runs until 23 October. Don't miss the chance to experience this quietly powerful body of work.

My Kitchen Table Paper Series

This series of original works on paper was created from the heart of my home, the kitchen table. It’s where life unfolds quietly: dogs at my feet, flowers in a jar, light shifting across familiar objects. These small, intimate pieces are rooted in observation and memory. They are a celebration of everyday beauty, daily life rituals, and the quiet stories that surround us when we slow down and take notice.
